Motilal Vora was a veteran Congress leader and a staunch loyalist of the Gandhi family. A two-time Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh he was among the senior-most Congress leaders with vast experience in administrative and economic matters. He had also served as the All India Congress Committee (AICC) treasurer for 16 years till 2018.
Born in 1928, Vora worked in several newspapers before joining politics. Staring as a member of the Municipal Committee of Durg (then part of Madhya Pradesh), Vora was elected to the Legislative Assembly (Vidhan Sabha) of Madhya Pradesh in 1972 on an INC ticket. He was elected to Vidhan Sabha again in 1977 and 1980. He served as the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh for two terms (1985–1988; 1989). A trusted Gandhi family loyalist Vora had served several terms as a Rajya Sabha member and was also a former Governor of Uttar Pradesh. He had also served as the All India Congress Committee (AICC) treasurer for 16 years till 2018.
Death and Condolences
Vora died due to post Covid-19 complications on 21 December 2020. He was 93. Several leaders and eminent personalities paid tribute to the departed soul.
